BTS Fans Losing Thousands to Scammers as Comeback Tour Ticket War Erupts

Introduction

BTS is back. After a three-year hiatus while members completed mandatory military service in South Korea, the world’s biggest K-pop group has launched its massive Arirang World Tour and the demand for tickets has been nothing short of explosive. But for thousands of heartbroken fans across Southeast Asia, the excitement has turned into a costly nightmare. Scammers have swooped in, and the losses are staggering.

What Is the BTS Arirang World Tour?Fake accounts mimicking fan resellers on X, Instagram, and Carousell

The BTS reunion marks one of the most anticipated events in modern music. Following years of military service commitments, pandemic disruptions, and an extended hiatus, the seven members of BTS RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook are finally performing together again. The group’s global tour began in April and is scheduled to continue through 2027, covering 34 cities worldwide. Industry analysts estimate that BTS and entertainment company Hybe could generate nearly $2 billion through ticket sales, merchandise, streaming, album purchases, sponsorships, and licensing opportunities.

The Ticket War: What Happened

When Vevee logged in to Ticketmaster on June 9, she hoped her years-long wait to see supergroup BTS was finally drawing to an end. Like millions of fans everywhere, the 26-year-old took the day off work. The tour was making a stop in Jakarta and as a longtime fan, she couldn’t fathom missing it. Perched in front of her computer, eyes glued to her queue number, she waited for hours. When it was her turn, the tickets had been snapped up.

The number of people trying to get tickets in Asia exceeded available seats by 15 times.

Desperate, Vevee did what many fans did she turned to social media looking for resale tickets. She found an account on X offering VIP seats and paid $1,200 for four tickets.

They soon stopped responding. “Right after I sent the money, they ghosted me. It’s horrible. I am so sad and heartbroken,” she said.

The Scale of the Scam

Desperate fans in Southeast Asia, where BTS is performing 15 of 88 shows, have lost more than $100,000 as scammers cash in on explosive demand.

  • Indonesia: Multiple fans defrauded through X (Twitter) accounts and Instagram pages
  • Thailand: Lawmakers are hearing a complaint by 126 fans who were duped by an offer to help them “wait in line” for tickets.
  • Singapore: A sophisticated BTS concert ticket scam network has defrauded fans of at least S$11,000 (~$8,500 USD). The Singapore Police Force confirmed at least 14 unique cases since June 1.
  • Malaysia: Authorities reported over 40 cases linked to BTS ticket scams, with total losses nearing RM 96,000. Scammers claimed to have insider access to VIP packages, soundcheck passes, and priority-entry tickets.

How the Scams Work

Scammers are using increasingly sophisticated tactics:

  1. Social Media Impersonation Fake accounts mimicking fan resellers on X, Instagram, and Carousell
  2. Power of Attorney Forms Some scammers even offer “power of attorney forms” typically used to hand over legal decision-making to someone else to convince targets the tickets are authentic.
  3. Fake Ticketing Websites Kaspersky experts detected at least 10 fraudulent domains mimicking the official pre-sale pages for concerts in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, France, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, and Spain all created in early April.
  4. Queue Service Fraud Scammers offer to join the online ticket queue on your behalf, collect payment, then disappear.
  5. Fake Booking Confirmations Fabricated screenshots used to convince victims that payment was legitimate.

What Ticketmaster Is Doing

Ticketmaster says it has already “stepped up its fight against ticket scalpers and bots with new AI technology and tougher rules.” Tickets will be verified against concertgoers’ email addresses, while fans holding resold tickets may be turned away on concert day.

BTS tickets from Ticketmaster are entirely non-transferable and cannot be legally resold. Anyone holding unverified BTS concert resale tickets will be turned away at the gates without a refund.

How to Protect Yourself: Complete Safety Guide

  1. Only buy from official sources Ticketmaster, Weverse, or the official BTS tour website.
  2. Never pay via QR code or instant payment apps to strangers.
  3. Do not trust “queue service” offers There is no legitimate version of this.
  4. Verify URLs carefully Fake sites closely mimic official pages.
  5. Screenshot everything If you do transact, keep records.
  6. Report scams immediately Contact your bank, platform support, and local police.
  7. Enable two-factor authentication on all accounts.
  8. Singapore police also advise fans to utilise the ScamShield app and restrict digital banking transaction limits.
